Leopold's Mess: Carbonera Creek- A Watershed Moment
In the weeks and months leading up to March 3rd, 2020, the immediate area of Carbonera Creek became the sight of an environmental disaster. Nearby neighbors made Santa Cruz County's District 1 Supervisor John Leopold aware of the threat to both the forest and adjacent watershed resulting from the detritus of a large encampment of criminal transients. They had been after him to abate this unlawful encampment for months. Its origin, drug addicts unlawfully camping, and reporting to authorities predated covid.
On March 3rd, I became aware of it.
5 months later, the Hazmat site was restored. City Park Rangers, Sheriff's Office, and Hazmat Team (along with "invited" neighbors) removed 93 tons of debris, filling 13 40yd Dumpsters, at a cost reported to be at least $60.000.00.
