In 2017, as reported by the Sentinel's J York, then 26 year old Tyler Everett Evenson chased a homeowner into the man’s home and stole keys to a GMC Yukon (The homeowner fled out the back of the house). Evenson then had cops all over him on HWY 17 before he crashed the vehicle into an embankment. Evenson then got out of the wrecked Yukon and attempted to carjack another vehicle. That didn’t go so well- he was beatin’ to the ground by the driver (who had his family in the car) and held for police.

In a plea deal a year later, the Santa Cruz DA (Jeff Rosell) dismissed the carjacking charge in exchange for a No Contest plea to burglary. Evenson was sentenced to 6 years state prison, out in 3 for good behavior. (ref Case 17CR04177)

Freshly out of prison and on state parole for the 2018 conviction, Evenson again attempted to carjack a vehicle (SCPD Case# 21S-01928). This time in the City of Santa Cruz, on the 100 Block of Ocean View Ave… in broad daylight. The cops got him at the scene, and he was taken to jail. Bail was set at $25,000.00 for the fresh charges, and Parole placed a hold on him. That was on April 3rd, 2021 (ref Booking# B-586666)
This case is still in the process of being adjudicated (
21CR01405), but in reviewing the court docs so far, I see that the DA’s Office failed to make the case for carjacking. I question their effort. 3 months later, Judge Burdick released him on Own Recognizance.

On January 5th, 2022, while out on Own Recognizance for the 2021 carjacking attempt (I mean the assault great bodily injury case!), Evenson was picked up on the 2400 Block of Mission Street for public intoxication (meth addict), vandalism, and a warrant (SCPD Case# 22S-00077). On February 18th, 2022, the Honorable Judge Burdick again approved the Own Recognizance release for Evenson (21CR01405).

All that leads to yesterday- March 8th, 2022…

At or about 4:00pm on the 300 Block of Soquel Ave, a suspect (later Identified as Tyler Everett Evenson) entered the parking lot of a business, and attempted a carjacking, failed and tried again with a second vehicle. Succeeded, but almost immediately rendered the car useless when he wrecked it, and bailed out on foot across the street. Multiple eyewitnesses directed the SCPD Officers, who were arriving in numbers by this time, to Evenson… who was now out at the Intersection of Ocean and Soquel attempting to carjack a third vehicle. No luck- the cops were on him, a fight ensued, and Evenson was eventually hit by a taser and handcuffed (SCPD Case# 22S-01393).

Evenson, now 30 years old, is back in a steel cage... where he belongs, and had his bail increased to $100,000.00 on 3 fresh charges of PC 215 (Carjacking), vandalism (for the wrecked car he stole), and battery on a peace officer (for the street fight). State Parole has a No Bail Hold on him as well (but who know how long that’ll last) (ref Booking# B-593378) .

911 Audio of March 8th, 2022 Carjacking

The DA’s Office already has a criminal case filed on Evenson for this incident (22CR00985), and the arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow, March 10th, at 8:15am PST. I put the over/under on the DA once again dismissing (all 3!) carjacking charges at 70/30.
