“Just walked through the Benchlands looking out for a couple bikes that were stolen from a friend and her daughter. Didn’t see the bikes there (though there were HUNDREDS of bikes, many of which were partially chopped). What an absolute disaster and crisis of humanity. In addition to the questionably obtained bikes (sorry, there is no reason why 1 man had 20 partially chopped frames), there was tons of what appeared to be stolen property (children’s backpacks), human waste, litter everywhere (despite several dumpsters and garbage cans with room), people shooting up and smoking meth pipes in broad daylight, latrines dug out, teenage-looking KIDS wandering about like zombies, people fighting, people muttering to themselves, people screaming at no one in particular. Allowing this “encampment” to persist is not compassionate - the exact opposite in fact. God help us.”

"That's a hole dug next to the shopping cart where people shit. The white stuff is used toilet paper."

"Really, the goal is to get all of the needs assessed that people need and they're very varied."

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — "As another storm front threatens the Central Coast a warning was issued Monday afternoon for dozens of people living in a large homeless camp along the river at San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz."
“And honestly there are few choices immediately available to help with these efforts and even few resources for staffing those efforts.”

"The sanctioned encampment in the lower portion of the San Lorenzo Park known as the Benchlands has been in its current location since April of 2021. Although the court injunction that forced the creation of this camp has been lifted, the region has lacked the available shelter capacity necessary to fully close the encampment. Instead, this encampment has continued as a central site for those living unhoused within the City limits and as an alternative when other unsanctioned encampments need to be closed, as was the case with Lot 27 and the cemetery encampments in January. Limited services such as trash collection, portable toilets, and water have been provided. The Benchlands sanctioned encampment was never intended to be long-term, and with the creation of new emergency shelter capacity through the CSSO, Benchlands campers will be offered more stable, appropriate shelter locations when the Benchlands is closed in Summer 2022. Through the establishment of sufficient emergency shelter capacity across the region, our goal is to eliminate the use of the Benchlands for purposes of emergency shelter and restore the area as a community park."

“These are spaces where people are allowed to be with no management whatsoever. So it’s a scenario where the most aggressive people control the space. "

"Staff continues to move forward with planning for the closure of the Benchlands camp this summer. To support that effort, we’re focusing on expanding shelter capacity. In addition to the expanded capacity at the Armory, we are in planning discussions with the County and Housing Matters to add shelter capacity at the Coral Street campus over the next several months. We are also partnering with County agencies to intensify outreach, case management, and housing navigation efforts in the Benchlands."

"We were told that on Saturday night, a tent had exploded - burning and killing a male Individual. We visited an hour later and took these photos.
This follows two overdose deaths only days earlier. We’re stunned that these deaths have now become so frequent that they go unreported and unacknowledged by city and county officials who’re responsible for this... "
